In today’s podcast you are going to learn some Christmas vocabulary. For example, do you know how to say: ‘los tres reyes magos’ in English?

So, back to English, what would you say it is: 

Is it: - ‘the 3 kings’, ‘the 3 magicians’, ‘the 3 wizards’, which one do you think is correct?

Stay until the end to find the right answer and/or to find out if any of them are correct at all.

But let’s now start with the first magical night of these holidays. Do you know how to say ‘Noche Buena’ in English?

Well, in English, and in Spanish too in fact.., this is the evening ‘before’ Christmas, therefore we are going to say: ‘Christmas Eve’

So, Christmas Eve (the evening before Christmas Day) is our ‘noche buena’ o ‘noche de Navidad’

And then we have of course: “Christmas Day’ which is ‘el día de Navidad’.

As an aside, let me remind you to use the preposition ‘on’ in front of any of these expressions when we want to say something like ‘el día de Navidad…’  ‘On Christmas Day, we…’  because it is a day, and we use ‘on’ in front of days, never ‘el’.

But let’s move on, which other special evening do we have a few days later?

¡La noche de fin de año’, right? And if ‘el nuevo año’ is ‘New Year’, the evening before this day will be? New Year’s Eve!!

Again, literally, the evening before New Year!

Easy right?

Just remember, every time we want to say ‘la noche de Navidad’ o ‘la noche de fin de año’ you need to think of using ‘evening’ instead of ‘night’, inverse the order of the words and think of the contraction for evening, that is to say, use ‘eve’ instead of ‘evening’.

Super easy! But just in case, let’s repeat together, we say:  ‘on Christmas Eve’ and ‘on New Year’s Eve’. 

And now I told you I was going to explain to you how to say correctly: ‘los tres reyes magos’ in English, remember?

Of course I haven’t forgotten about it, so there we go, pay attention:

• Never, ever say again ‘the 3 kings’ nor ‘the 3 magicians’ nor ‘ the 3 wizards.

Those are literal translations from English into Spanish.

And then, you may wonder? How do we say it?

We say, and don’t ask me why: ‘The 3 Wise Men’.  If it helps you, think of the wizard Merlin, a wizard or a mage is actually a wise man (hombre sabio).

So, now you know it, from now on, remember always to say: ‘the 3 Wise Men’.

And now, our short summary in Spanish:

Recuerda que las dos noches más especiales de la Navidad tienen una construcción muy parecida y muy lógica. Para que te sea más fácil recordarlo, te recomiendo que en lugar de pensar en ‘Noche buena’ y ‘Noche vieja’ pienses en ‘la noche de Navidad’ y ‘la noche de fin de año’.

Si piensas así la expresión en inglés te saldrá enseguida ya que será una traducción casi literal, de esa forma, 

para decir: ‘noche de Navidad’ diremos: ‘Christmas Eve’ (es decir, the evening before Christmas -> Christmas Eve) y 

para decir: ‘noche de fin de año’ diremos: ‘New Year’s Eve’ (es decir, the evening before the New Year starts).

Un par de cositas también, recuerda siempre, cuando construyas estas expresiones:

1- utilizar ‘evening’ y no ‘night’ que sería la traducción literal de ‘noche’.

2- abreviar ‘evening’ y utilizar ‘eve’  (que será la abreviación de ‘evening’)

3- invertir el orden, la palabra más importante va siempre al final (en lugar de decir: the evening of Christmas, diremos ‘Christmas Eve’.

Y eso es todo, ya lo tienes.

Y ahora vamos a por los tres personajes más importantes de la Navidad, los 3 Reyes Magos.

Debes saber que a pesar de que en países angloparlantes se hable más de Papá Noel, cuando quieras referirte a los reyes magos deberás hacerlo correctamente y para ello dirás:

‘The 3 Wise Men’  (que literalmente significa: los 3 hombres sabios).

Ten cuidado y no les otorgues nunca el título de reyes, pues aunque para nosotros son los tres reyes, en países de habla inglesa se les conoce como los tres hombres sabios. Si te sirve de algo, recuerda al mago Merlín, el mago de larga barba blanca siempre rodeado de libros.
